The Midland GXT740VP3 walkie-talkies are a solid product – provided there are few obstructions between you and the other person using them. Hills, trees, buildings, etc. will shorten their usable distance dramatically – to about 2 or 3 miles. Oh, and don’t loose the manual or your cooked! Other than that, their great.

i am on the fire department an used these radios on several occasions in non emergency situations. Our $400 7 watt fire radios on simplex get almost exactly the same range!!! which is about 3 miles 3.5 at best

Bought these at Staples thinking I can at least get a 2 mile range out of them…bare in mind I live in the suburbs of Atlanta. I barely got out of my neighborhood and lost my wife on the other end. I live a 1/2 mile from the interstate, and not much is in between my house and the freeway…well I never picked up anyone on the radio. It’s very user friends, compact, battery life is okay, not great. I ended up taking them back and ordering another Midland hand held, and ordered an external intenna. It will work great if you are following someone relatively close on the road. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re trying to get some distance out of it.

Don’t expect this unit to go any farther than a mile. I haven’t tried it yet in the desert or open plains, as I don’t live there. You could actually do better with a 2 meter in simplex mode (if you have a ham radio license (which is good for 10 years, and a few bucks). This unit requires you to have a license too…I think it was 80 bucks for 3 years???
You can use it in either 5 watt (license require) of 2 watt I guess. I love using this around the house, you don’t have to depend on a lost signal from your cell..lol
You can research more of that crap on the FCC site.
In either event, this unit WILL NOT GO BEYOND WHAT YOU’D EXPECT as it’s advertised.

These are better than the Uniden FRS/GMRS radios I own — louder, many more features, and a much easier user interface for locking and unlocking. Transmission distance seems better though I haven’t compared side-by-side. Battery life is phenomenal — after a full day of skiing it still shows all 3 bars.
